The goal of the “Choices” program is the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among the youth of El Paso, specifically the CIS targeted areas. Communities in Schools provide the Choices program to six high schools in the Ysleta, Socorro, and Clint Independent School Districts. The program implements Life Skills Training through an evidence based curriculum at the various campuses and helps students explore key skills that are vital in leading a healthy lifestyle. Choices also presents and distributes information to the schools on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The program coordinates drug free alternative activities that encourage youth to resist drugs and make better choices about their health.
Funded through the Health and Human Service Commission (HHSC), the activities and services supported through this program are integrated into the CIS service delivery network already in place in the schools. In this manner, students participating in the Choices substance abuse prevention services may not only receive these services but rather the entire array of activities and services called for by the CIS program design. In addition to a strong network of resources for referral activities, CIS-Choices also work with families to educate and promote a drug free, and healthy living life style.
